In Memory of Sensei Fred Tan
Fred Tan was a coach and instructor at the Steveston Judo Club for many years.  He was also a provincial coach for Judo BC. He was an excellent coach and dedicated instructor.  Many judoka benefitted by working with Fred.  He will be missed.  He passed away last Saturday, November 8, 2014.
There will be a Church Service for Fred on Friday 21st November at 11:00 am at St. Joseph's The Worker Parish, 4451 Williams Road, Richmond, BC.

The family requests in lieu of flowers please make donations to Steveston Judo Club or a charity of your choice.

Referee Development Seminar, Prince George - Last Chance to Register
Judo BC will be hosting a referee development seminar in Prince George November 29 & 30, 2014. This developmental seminar is targeted for judokas interested in becoming referees and for Provincial level A, B, C and D referees however referees of all levels are welcome to attend.

Team BC Competed Well at Ontario OpenCongratulations to all BC competitors who competed at the Ontario Open. These athletes also spent the week leading up to the tournament at the National Training Camp in Montreal. There were many medal performances including:

Amara Jarvinen: U16/-63kg Gold; U18/-63kg Silver
Ario Nishimura: U18/-73kg Gold
Lavanna Laass: U21/-63kg Bronze; Sr/-63kg Silver
Megan Hanks: U21/-78kg Gold; Sr/-78kg Silver
Meghan Jamieson: Sr/-70kg Silver
Braxton Clark: U21/-90kg Bronze
Aidan Fentiman: U21/-90kg Bronze
Tavis Jamieson: U21/-100kg Gold; Sr/-100kg Silver
Dante St. Prix: Sr/-73kg Silver

Judo BC Winter Training Camp Featuring Former National Coach Sensei Nakamura
Judo BC will be hosting the 2014 Winter Training Camp at the Abbotsford Judo ClubDecember 27-30, 2014. This is for judoka who are U16 + and have minimum orange belt. The registration fee is $50/person with each club submitting one payment.

Compete in the Saskatchewan Open
Judo BC is sending a team to the 2015 Saskatchewan Open January 24 & 25. If you are interested in participating in this tournament as member of the BC team on a self-funded basis please review all information by

To qualify for selection for the 2015 National Championships, please review the Team BC Selection Criteria Policy by

All Junior and Senior athletes selected to represent BC at the championships are required to travel and stay with the team. for more information about team travel please review the

*Important New: In order to compete at the National Championships, all coaches and athletes must complete an on-line learning module produced by the Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport (CCES). This exercise must be completed two weeks prior to the accreditation day of the event. The module will take approximately 90 minutes to complete and is mandatory for everyone.

NCCP Competition Development
Judo BC is planning to hosting a Judo Canada NCCP Competition Development (Comp Dev) course in 2015. This course is the next step in the competition stream after completing the Dojo Instructor training and certification. Pre requisites, in addition to DI certification, include the following 6 multi sport modules:

  • Coaching & Leading Effectively
  • Developing Athletic Abilities
  • Prevention & Recovery
  • Psychology of Performance
  • Leading Drug Free Sport
  • Managing Conflict
All of these courses are offered by Coaches BC (classroom or online) and here is a link to the course schedule: http://www.viasport.ca/course-calendar
Once you have taken these multi sport modules please let us know so that we can add you to the list of people eligible for the Comp Dev course.
