Steve Sakai Memorial Award
Judo BC was pleased to present the Steve Sakai Memorial Award to Mickey Fitzgerald at the 2013 AGM held on June 22, 2013 in Richmond. This award is presented annually to a long time member of Judo BC who exemplifies the principles of Kodokan Judo. Mickey holds the rank of Rokudan, studyed and trained for 6 years at the Kodokan in Japan, started the Parkland Secondary School Judo Club in 1990, the Parkland Judo Academy in 2012, is the chief instructor at Victoria Judo Club and is a member of the Judo BC Grading Board.

Success for Judo BC Referees at the Panamerican Open
Congratulations to Paul Whishaw and Sean Hall who successfully passed their referee exams in El Salvador at the Panamerican Open.
Judo BC Board of Directors Judo BC is pleased to welcome Eric Cherneff to the Board of Directors. Eric was elected to the position of Treasurer for a two year term at the 2013 AGM held on June 22 in Richmond. In his professional life, Eric is a Chartered Accountant and former treasurer of the Victoria Judo Club. He holds the rank of Yondan from the Kodokan, is qualified as a NCCP Level 2/Dojo Instructor, and competes in Masters and Kata divisions. Also re elected to the board: Sandy Kent as President and Bruce Fingarson to the position of 2nd Vice President. Judo BC would like to thank out going Board member Sandra Hewson for her commitment and dedication to Judo BC over the past 2 years.
Make A Champ Makes History
For the first time in history Canadian judo stars unite to support their fellow athletes by raising funds for the July 4th to 7th Canadian Judo Championship in Vancouver, BC, Canada. Judo BC, along with Judo Quebec and Judo Canada have made donations to this fund raising effort. Both Judo Quebec and Judo Canada have promised to support athletes, including any BC judokas, who sign up for the campaign next year for travel to the Championships in Quebec. National Kata Judges Evaluation Seminar
Judo Canada has announced there will be a National Kata Judges Evaluation Seminar taking place during the 2013 Canadian Judo Championships in Richmond in July. This seminar is open to those that wish to become National Kata Judges or upgrade their present standing. Please click here for information and the registration. Note:to be graded as a national kata judge, BC candidates must be approved by the BC Grading Board.
Sport Development Director
Judo BC is continuing it's search for an outstanding person to help lead the Development of the organization. Reporting to the Volunteer Board of Directors for Judo BC, the Sport Development Director (SDD) is responsible for contributing to and enacting the strategic plan developed by the Board of Directors and helping our member clubs develop Judo in their area. They will also act as Head Coach for Judo BC, organizing the annual plan and working with volunteer regional coaches and athletes. Candidates who have previously applied for this position are welcome to resubmit their resume and cover letter.
