Waza of the Week: Tomoe Nage
Tomoe Nage (Circle throw). It is classified as a rear sacrifice technique or Masutemi Waza. Most effective when Uke is pushing Tori. Tomoe nage is performed by Tori gripping Uke high and falling backward as in a backward roll. Once Uke balance is broken, Tori places a foot low on Uke at waist level and applies strong pressure, rolling onto his own back with Uke above him. Uke rolls over Tori and Uke land on his back. Variations that maintain the high grip and complete the backward roll allow Tori to mount Uke for newaza.
